A Modern Engagement Session in Zurich | Lake Zurich & Le Corbusier

There is something special about photographing couples in Zurich.

The city has an unusual balance between architecture, nature and everyday life. Within a short walk, you can move from bold modernist buildings to quiet green spaces and the waterfront of Lake Zurich, creating completely different atmospheres without turning a couple session into a complicated production.

For Jeanne and Marc’s session, we explored the area around Pavillon Le Corbusier and Zürichhorn, on the eastern side of Lake Zurich.

Rather than creating something overly posed, the idea was simple: walk, explore the surroundings and photograph them naturally while using the architecture and landscape as part of the story.

The result became one of my favorite kinds of couple sessions: relaxed, modern and distinctly Zurich.

Engagement Photos at Pavillon Le Corbusier in Zurich

One of the first locations we photographed was the Pavillon Le Corbusier, located beside Lake Zurich in the Seefeld area.

Designed by Le Corbusier, the pavilion is particularly recognizable for its geometric structure, glass and steel construction and bold panels of red, yellow, green, black and white.

It was Le Corbusier’s final architectural project and today operates as a museum managed by the Museum für Gestaltung Zürich.

For photography, it offers something completely different from the traditional image most people associate with Switzerland.

Instead of mountains and rustic landscapes, there are strong lines, symmetry, negative space and color.

That contrast worked beautifully with Jeanne and Marc’s neutral wardrobe.

Their white and soft grey clothing allowed the architecture to remain present without overwhelming them, while the colorful facade created an almost editorial backdrop.

For couples who appreciate architecture, fashion or contemporary design, this part of Zurich is an incredible starting point for an engagement session.

From Modern Architecture to Lake Zurich

What makes this area particularly interesting for a Zurich engagement photoshoot is how quickly the environment changes.

Just a few minutes from the pavilion, you reach the waterfront around Zürichhorn.

Suddenly the architecture disappears and the photographs become softer.

Trees frame the lake, boats move quietly in the distance and the hills across the water create a completely different visual language.

That variety means we can create two very different sets of photographs during the same session without spending half the day driving between locations.

For Jeanne and Marc, we moved from structured architectural portraits into quieter photographs beside Lake Zurich.

Some of my favorite images from the session are actually the simplest ones: the two of them sitting beside the water, looking toward the lake.

There is no complicated pose or dramatic location.

Just them, Zurich and a quiet moment together.

Why Zürichhorn Is a Great Location for Couple Photos

If you are planning engagement photos in Zurich, Zürichhorn is one of the locations I would seriously consider.

It works especially well because you have several environments within walking distance:

• Lake Zurich and views across the water
• mature trees and green spaces
• the architecture surrounding Pavillon Le Corbusier
• quieter pathways for candid photographs
• nearby cafés and small everyday locations that can make the session feel more personal

That last element is important.

An engagement session does not need to look like a fashion campaign from beginning to end.

Some of the photographs couples remember most are often the smallest moments in between.

Walking together.

Stopping somewhere unexpectedly.

Getting a coffee.

Or, in Jeanne and Marc’s case, getting ice cream.

Those moments give the gallery personality.

Ending the Session With Gelato in Zurich

Toward the end of the session, Jeanne and Marc stopped for ice cream.

It was not meant to be a complicated photographic concept.

And that is exactly why it worked.

Instead of directing every movement, I could simply photograph the interaction between them.

The colors of the gelateria, the cones in their hands and the slightly playful moment created photographs that felt completely different from the architectural portraits we had made earlier.

For me, this is a big part of documentary engagement photography.

I will guide you when necessary, especially when light, composition or location can make a photograph stronger.

But I also want space for things to happen naturally.

A couple session should still feel like the two of you.

What to Wear for an Engagement Session in Zurich

You do not need an elaborate wardrobe for engagement photographs.

In fact, for a location like Zürichhorn and Pavillon Le Corbusier, simplicity can work extremely well.

Jeanne and Marc chose a very neutral palette: white, cream and light grey.

Against the strong colors of the pavilion, that decision made them immediately stand out in the photographs.

For couples considering a similar session, I normally recommend:

Neutral or complementary colors.
White, beige, cream, grey, black and muted tones photograph beautifully and tend to remain timeless.

Avoid competing with the location.
If we are photographing somewhere architecturally strong, the clothes do not need to be equally loud.

Wear something that feels like you.
Photographs become awkward very quickly when someone feels uncomfortable in their clothes.

Think about movement.
Dresses, jackets and fabrics with some movement can add another layer to photographs, particularly beside the lake.

The goal is not to dress like somebody else for your engagement photos.

The goal is to create a slightly more intentional version of how you already like to look.

When Is the Best Time for Engagement Photos in Zurich?

Light changes considerably throughout the year in Switzerland, so there is no single answer.

During spring and summer, longer days give us much more flexibility and Zürichhorn becomes especially beautiful because of the greenery around the lake.

Early morning can be excellent if you want quieter surroundings.

Late afternoon and evening usually provide softer light and can transition beautifully into sunset around Lake Zurich.

But I would not choose a time exclusively because someone online says that “golden hour is always best.”

The architecture around the Pavillon Le Corbusier, for example, can work incredibly well in stronger daylight because the shadows and geometric shapes become part of the composition.

The right time depends on the type of photographs we want to create.

Do we need to know how to pose?

Not at all. I will give you direction whenever it helps the photograph, but you do not need any experience in front of a camera. Most of the session involves simple movement and interaction rather than holding complicated poses.
